Kirstenbosch wins gold at Flower Show

South Africa has taken gold yet again at this year's Royal Horticultural Society's Chelsea Flower Show in London.

iAfrica reports that South Africa's stand at the Chelsea Flower Show celebrates "100 Blooming Years" of Kirstenbosch and involves a sensory walk where visitors could experience the tranquility of our country's most famous conservation garden.

The exhibit shows the oldest plants in the garden - those that were introduced during the first five years of its establishment, between 1913 and 1917, and are still growing there today.

Win a dream come true: Jordy Smith

South African Jordy Smith was delighted after picking up his first victory of the season on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour.

Smith edged Brazilian favourite Adriano de Souza in Sunday's final of the Billabong Rio Pro at Barra Da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

"This win feels unbelievable. It's another dream come true," Smith said.

"I knew I could win a World Tour event, but I had to prove to myself that I could do it away from South Africa.

Japanese climber, 80, becomes oldest atop Everest

An 80-year-old Japanese mountaineer on Thursday became the oldest man to reach the top of Mount Everest, a Nepali official and Miura’s Tokyo-based support team said.

Yuichiro Miura, who also conquered the 29,035-foot (8,850-meter) peak when he was 70 and 75, reached the summit at 9:05 a.m. local time Thursday, according to his support team. Miura and his son Gota called them from the summit to report the news.

Four cheetahs born at Sanbona

Cape Town – Sanbona seems to be busting with wildlife at the moment - with the birth of a litter of cheetah cubs hot on the heels of its sixth elephant calf born at the reserve.

Following on from the birth of a healthy elephant calf on Mother’s Day, the sixth elephant calf born at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, the reserve announced the birth of  four cheetah cubs, in a statement.

KZN loses 11 rhinos in three weeks

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has announced the discovery of 11 rhino carcasses, all lost to poaching incidents that have occurred over the past three weeks.
