Felix Baumgartner breaks the sound barrier.

Los Angeles - Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner broke the sound barrier during his jump from the edge of space on Sunday, but he did not set a new record for the longest freefall, a mission spokesperson told AFP.

The 43-year-old Austrian achieved the fastest ever freefall speed at 1 137 km/h during the 4 minutes and 19 seconds of descent from an altitude of 39km, said spokesperson Sarah Anderson.

Cape Town - The Mother City has been nominated as a candidate for the Most Innovative City of the Year award, along with 24 other global cities.  Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos is the only other African city on the list.

The competition is sponsored by Citigroup in partnership with the Urban Land Institute. It recognises places where people, passion and ingenuity are shaping efforts to build sustainable and liveable cities.
