Baby elephant born at Sanbona

Cape Town - Mother Nature celebrated Mother's Day in true style at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, just outside Cape Town and part of Shamwari Group, with the birth of a healthy elephant calf, which became the sixth elephant calf born at the reserve.

At this point rangers are keeping their distance to ensure Mother and calf have sufficient time to bond and as yet the sex of the calf is unknown.

The herd is very protective of the youngster and have truly welcomed it into the herd, which roam free on the 54, 000 hectares of pristine wilderness.

Thandora finding her feet

Cape Town - Thandora, the elephant recently re-introduced into the wild at Gondwana Game Reserve after being held in captivity for 23 years, is slowly acclimatising to her new home.

The team watching over her on Monday continued to move her closer to the two elephants they hope she will form a small herd with, according to Greg Vogt from Conservation Global.

The idea is that she will eventually want to be with the other elephants more than the team and their Land Rover.

Beached whales have been saved.

Cape Town - Five beached whales that washed ashore at Long Beach in Kommetjie have been successfully rescued, the Cape City disaster Risk management said.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning, when the beached pod of 20 whales was discovered by members of the community.  It was unclear how long the marine mammals had been there.

Cape Town - The Mother City's beautiful scenery and spirited locals seem to have won Virgin group founder and super businessman, Sir Richard Branson's heart over the weekend, as he took part in the Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour for the first time.

Shortly after completing the race, Branson posted a piece on his blog, praising the smooth organization, natural beauty and "crowds of local people... that swept everybody along with their cheering."

Reeva's family won't attend Oscar Pistorius Trial.

Cape Town - Reeva Steenkamp's uncle and cousin have spoken about how they are coping with the loss of the model, saying they won't attend the trial of Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of murdering her on Valentine's Day.

In an interview on Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN broadcast on Thursday, Mike Steenkamp said her death "hasn't really sunk in to my way of thinking".

The family wanted to focus on Reeva, and not why she's gone, he said, which is why they won't attend the trial.
